Enough Ed to Survive on the FreeBSD, Linux, NetBSD, and OpenBSD Command Line.

Enter the ed(1) command mode

There are two modes of operation known to ed(1): append and command.

Append mode is used to add text and command mode is where you tell ed(1) to do something else with your file (save it, search, replace, delete a line, etc.) Just like vi(1), ed(1) too starts in command mode, so you don't have to do anything to enter it after you start ed(1) by itself or open a file.

If you have been working in text append mode, do the following:

Hit the Enter/Retur key once.

Type full stop (.).

Hit the Enter/Return key again.
