Every newcomer to Unix and Unix-like operating systems has to have at least some rudimentary knowledge of the dreaded vi(1) editor.

But what if even that text editor is not available on your system? What can you use when you boot the system off a rescue disk or enter single user mode?

If you thought vi(1) was unfriendly to humans, wait until you meet ed(1). This is what real admins use after they run out of papyrus.
